A Thesis Project

14 Mar

Mikey Burton did a thesis project redesigning classic literature book coves that are directed at teenagers. I’m really liking the covers. They all have illustrative approach which I think is appropriate. Check out his site.

The Brand Quiz

3 Mar

My friend emailed me this quiz today. How well do you know brands and what colours are associated with different brands? It gives you two colours, a visual clue and a cryptic/textual clue. My score was 17 out of 21. Not bad. Do you know your brands? Find out here:

Book covers!

22 Feb

We are going to be redesigning a book for editorial class, not all the pages but a selection of pages from it. I’m really excited about designing the cover. However, I haven’t quite made up my mind on which book I would like to redesign. There’s so many I would like to do and have fun with. Right now, I’m just looking at different book covers that I randomly come across and even people’s own list of beautiful covers.

Max-o-matic

While I was browsing the communication arts website just now, I came across this designer/illustrator, Máximo Tuja, from Barcelona. I really like his style. His illustrations are cut and paste compositions. <3 <3

Looking at his work makes me really excited to take illustration this summer. I can’t wait :)

Wayfinding Case Studies

23 Jan

Corbin

Corbin is a design firm located in Michigan. They work on improving the way people access places and information and also work with environmental graphics design. Because I am interesting in wayfinding, I thought this was a nice example of case studies of wayfinding across different cities in different areas. Take a look at the site. Thanks.

This website belongs to a journalist who has interest in typography and specifically the type on TTC subway stations. The link I posted above will lead you to a posting that is about the testing of public signs in Toronto which has not really been complete according to the posting. Read up if you are interested.

Urban Toronto

Urban Toronto – Wayfinding signage ideas

This website is a great place to find discussion and participate in discussion about issues in Toronto. I found a forum discussing the wayfinding signage of our TTC system and an example of how to improve it. People are saying to get rid of the north, south, west, and east bound and just put what the last station was. Others are offering examples of other systems of transit around the world that seem to work better. The Toronto system is not so hard to get use to if you know where you’re going and you know directions of where you are going. As a system for tourists, I don’t know about that. Even people living in Toronto seem to have trouble. Though I’ve seen some crazy train systems like Tokyo’s for example. O_O

Fred Eerdekens

This artist completely amazes me. Last semester, I did a project on him and he’s become one of my favourites. He creates messages  by manipulating object and light to create shadows that show the messages. I just can’t say enough how much I love his work. I would love to be able to experience some of his work in person. I don’t think it does it any justice with photos.

Click here for his website to read about him and see more of his work!
